Sewing Cute Retro Halloween Separates; Butterick 6354

It’s officially spooky season and I’m honestly a little bit in struggle town. At this current point in time I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water so although I had a massive Halloween sewing project planned (actually I’v been trying to compete it for over 2 years), I’ve decided to go easy on myself and just create a cute two piece Halloween retro set. Every year I try to sew myself a new garment for Halloween and it’s normally just some fun fabric in a pattern I’ve really been enjoying but this year, I wanted to reach one of my sewing goals for the year and make more separates and why not make them for Halloween?

A few months ago, I found this years Halloween fabric in Spotlight so I was happy I didn’t have to pick through the scraps that would be left in Spotlight currently. I sometimes like to buy my seasonal fabric early as things just sell out so quick these days (I also bought my Christmas fabric for the year the same time). This years Halloween fabric is a cute purple cotton covered with a scattering of cute witchy images in shades of black and white. Although I have used purple Halloween fabric before, I thought this fabric would particularly stand out with some back trim which is how I turned this idea into sewing separates. I thought that something with black straps or a black waistline would add an interesting contrast so I started browsing my patterns.

Although I’ve sewn from this pattern several times, I don’t think I’ve ever blogged the process for the bustier. Buttericks 6354 is a Gertie pattern for a bustier top, shorts and sarong. I have previously made the shorts to go with this outfit but I’ve never reviewed the top despite the fact I know I have made it a few times before. For today’s project, I wanted to make the top from Butterick 6354 and add black trim and halter straps. As for the bottoms of this outfit, I wanted to sew myself a simple self drafted circle skirt but add a black waistline to compliment the top. We now have our fabric, our pattern and our tea, it’s time to sew.

Sew, let’s get started. Butterick 6354 is a simple enough pattern but it does ask for boning which I will avoid for this particular project (mainly because I’m running out and my supplier is on back order). Putting the top together was really simple and there’s nothing too fiddly about the pattern. The back of the top is held together with buttons so I was happy to practice my button skills as it had been a while since I had done so. I also made the straps size adjustable by adding buttons so I could wealth straps straight or criss cross. Variety is the spice of life.

Moving onto the skirt, I wanted to make a circle skirt as I haven’t really been making many and I want to get better at them. I had more than enough fabric for a 27″ circle skirt and I let the skirt pieces hang for 24 hours so the bias would fall. At this point I wish I added pockets but for whatever reason I just plain forgot to do so. My waistband was a little too thick so next time I might narrow it by about half an inch but overall it came together quite easily.

The fit of this outfit was pretty spot on but I will need to be mindful of what bra I wear with the top as it can sit a little awkward at times. Despite this, I thought this was a super cute Halloween outfit. I like the fact that I can wear it as a complete outfit or mix and match with other garments in my closet; it would look cute with the top and some black capri pants or the skirt with some black tops. Despite me struggling a little in real life, I was super happy to have made myself a cute outfit for my favourite holiday season. This project has really made me want to make more separates especially for summer coming up. I want to sew this pattern again but turn the top into the bodice of a playsuit so if an occasion arrises, I will be returning to this project.

I can tell that the upcoming months may be a little bit of a struggle for me so I don’t know what’s going to happen with my regularly scheduled content releases. I think I need to take a break and I will return to blogging and YouTube as soon as I can but for now, it’s break time for me.

Happy Halloween everyone!
