The last time Erstwilder released an Art Nouveau collection (back in June 2020), it sold out within minutes so it’s a no-brainer that Erstwilder should revisit this collection and extend it. Well, here we are today at the cusp of a brand new collection inspired by the previous Art Nouveau collection but with a few new surprises. As always, Erstwilder was kind enough to let me review some of my favourite pieces for you which I am very excited to do!
For those who are unaware of what the Art Nouveau style is, it’s an ornamental style of art which grew to popularity between 1890 and 1910 in the United States and Europe. It is an iconic style easily identified with it’s use of long, sinuous, organisers lines and could be found in jewellery, glass design, posters and illustrations, architecture and interior design. Art Nouveau was deliberately created in opposition to the imitative historicism that was popular in much of the 19th century. The style glorifies freedom, bold colours, natural shapes, asymmetrical design, organic imagery and geometric shapes. When looking at the Erstwilder collection, you can really see the embodiment of this style which was done to absolute perfection.
I’m a particular fan of the amount of animals and mythical creatures featured in this collection. I have a big soft spot for the Prowling Fox as it really speaks to me for some reason. I’ve always thought foxes were beautiful creatures but having the fox featured with the moon made me think of The Little Prince story which I read countless times growing up as a kid. This fox was much like the fox in the story and having the astral element made it all the more magical.
I am also quite fond of the Octopode’s Abode brooch. Octopus are wonderful creatures and we are very lucky to share our planet with them but they are also so alien to us in many ways. This brooch is a very elegant and beautiful depiction of this majestic creature and I’m a particular fan of how the tentacles have been curled and arranged. It’s a very special piece.
As well as brooches, this collection also has necklaces, earrings, pins and a new range of essential earrings. I really loved how some pieces had matching sets such as the Steel Magnolias (brooch and necklace), Le Chat Noir (brooch and earrings) and the Tree of Life set (brooch and necklace). The sets are a great way to bring together an outfit with a signature statement piece. As for the enamel pins, there are 12 pieces in the collection which draw from the signature core range. I think these pins are great for those who just want something a little subtle or who wish to adorn a jacket, lanyard or backpack. Personally, I have them on my travel back pack as a way of carrying some of my favourite things with me as I adventure.
The Art Nouveau collection also has scarves in the head and neck lengths available with three different designs to choose from. I wear the head scarves a lot as they are comfortable, bright and a fun way to liven up an outfit, keep my curlers in and hiding a bad hair day. My favourite design from this collection is definitely the Le Chat as I love the striking colours found within it.
As always, if you are hoping to grab a few pieces from the collection or to view the other pieces not shown, you can do so by going to the Erstwilder website. As many collections sell out within minutes, I’d definitely advise you to hurry and grab what takes your fancy. If your item is sold out, check out some of Erstwilder’s stockists even if you have to call a few physical stores (yep, even I have done this many a time).
This is a wonderful collection and a great celebration of Art Nouveau and the unique turning point in the history of art it provoked. Erstwilder have really captured this beautiful style and have made some wonderful modern keepsakes of vintage inspired images. The pieces I have from this collection I will definitely treasure and enjoy wearing in all the days to come.
