Spoonflower’s Prepasted Removable Smooth Wallpaper Review

Over the last year and a half I have been slowly redecorating the house which included adding more colour, stylising and organising spaces around my home to be more functional and fun. During these renovations, I figured I would learn to wallpaper because how hard can it be? Well after watching about 2 YouTube tutorials, I figured I was an expert and set about getting myself some wallpaper. After initially getting overwhelmed and overexcited by the sheer amount of choice there is available, I ended up buying a fair amount of wallpaper from Spoonflower, especially their prepasted removable smooth wallpaper. After having used it a few times, I wanted to share a full review just incase you were thinking about glamming up your space as well.

For those unaware, Spoonflower is a website where artists and designers can upload their designs and then Spoonflower sells it printed over a variety of items such as fabric, bedding, decor and wallpaper. When styling my home, I often try to find and support as many small and hopefully local artists as I can so the wide selection of artists that Spoonflower provides is amazing and that’s not even mentioning the range of design choices you have as a shopper. When it comes to wallpaper from Spoonflower, there are several types on offer; prepasted removable smooth, peel and stick, non-pasted traditional pebble, grasscloth and the new gold metallic and silver metallic. For the purpose of this review, I will be focusing on my own experiences of the prepasted removable smooth wallpaper.

Spoonflower’s prepasted removable smooth wallpaper describes itself as being renter friendly and as an excellent wallpaper for a quick DIY project. In order to use the wallpaper, spray the repasted adhesive side of the paper with water and then apply it to your wall. It’s also worth noting that this wallpaper is PVC free, FSC certified and class A Fire Rated.

As mentioned above, I had never wallpapered anything before I set about putting up my first feature wall in my retro lounge area. I wanted to add some fun colour into this space and ended up using this design here as I loved the soft pinks, oranges and greens. I used Spoonflower’s wall calculator which helped me find out how many rolls I needed for my space and once they arrived, I set about wallpapering. To begin, I’d recommend washing your walls and fixing any holes or marks. You’d be surprised how obvious a grain of sand under your paper can look. I always made sure to sand and smooth my walls before I added wallpaper and it really made a difference.

This is the perfect wallpaper for beginners or anyone who is a bit nervous with wallpapering. The process of putting up the wallpaper is relatively easy and as long as you have someone helping you or at least keeping you company, it doesn’t take too long. The prepasted wallpaper has an adhesive side which is activated by water; I used a spray bottle to douse my paper and I used a trestle table to keep my paper off the floor. I’d recommend you liberally spray the top 3/4 of the wallpaper sheet with water and then fold it in on itself (paste to paste side), then douse the final quarter before folding that over on itself as well. It’s worth noting that you might benefit from using a plumb bob to make sure you have a straight line guide for your first drop of wallpaper because you’ll be surprised by how unstraight your walls may be. To apply the paper to your walls, peel the top fold off itself and line it up on your wall with a slight overhang at the top. Using a card (like a credit card or loyalty card) or a proper wallpaper smoothing tool, slowly blend out your paper and push out any air bubbles that might have appeared. Work your way slowly down the wall smoothing as you go and then unfold and stick the final fold over onto the wall. To put up the remaining drops, follow the same water dousing method but take your time to line up your pattern before smoothing it out.

One of the best things about this wallpaper is the overlapping pattern. Spoonflower gives each wallpaper drop a few centimetres of overlap which makes lining up your pattern really easy. I’d definitely recommend getting your first drop as straight as you can as pattern matching becomes much easier as you go along. I personally found matching the patterns oddly relaxing and fun but it can take some practice. This wallpaper is amazing to pull off the wall and redo sections or to push air bubbles and ripples out. I also found Spoonflowers prepasted wallpaper to be very forgiving if a dent or wrinkle appears. Unlike traditional paper wallpaper, this wallpaper is easy to smooth out even if it is dented and wrinkled which I appreciated so much especially during very fiddly projects (such as around my toilet and toilet pipes).

When it comes to trimming the prepasted wallpaper, I found that the sharpest blade works best and using a card as a guide to hold down and put pressure on the paper to work really well. I often found myself having to trim and cut the paper as I went especially around light switches, ventilation holes and pipes. Using a combination of curved scissors and straight scissors I was able to easy snip and cut away and around any obstacles I had. After trying out different wallpapers from other brands, I can hands down say that the prepasted from Spoonflower was my favourite to use especially when it came to lining up patterns, ease and trimming convenience.

If you need to trim your wallpaper, I’d recommend using a cutting mat, a wide ruler (I used my sewing ruler) and a sharp cutting knife such as a Stanley or xactoknife. Once you have your first sheet on the wall, you can see how much excess you need to trim off. I personally found trimming my paper just a little made it easier to use and didn’t leave me with heaps to trim off. I have also found that the left over off cuts of wallpaper were great to use as drawer liners and on smaller projects.

As the wallpaper is prepasted, I personally loved how easy and convienient it was to not have to worry about wallpaper paste. I often found myself preferring to finish rooms with Spoonflowers wallpaper over other rooms (I do kind of wish I had just used all Spoonflower wallpaper sometimes). I found that I never had to worry about paste consistency, putting too much or too little paste on the paper or even worrying about slip on the walls once the paper is up. With the paste being water activated, having a spray bottle handy to get into certain parts of the installation site and rewet the paper was very convenient and also clean. There was no sticky or messy residue and although sometimes I would push glue out from under the paper on the walls, it was easy to either wipe it off or scrape it off the wall and smear it where it needs to be.

It’s worth noting that the wallpaper once up looks amazing and so bright and bold (depending on your design of course). I find the texture to be really smooth and looks stunning. I also love how easy it is to clean as it generally just wipes off. Although I’m not willing to test the theory, the wallpaper is also very strong and sturdy once it’s cured onto the wall. I have accidentally bumped and bashed the walls with various objects and none have left any marks or dents which is a big plus. With the mention of curing or drying, I found that within about 4 hours, the wallpaper was fully cured and in some cases I had already started installing art over the wallpaper the next day. And just incase you’re wondering, there was no smell or odd scent during or after the wallpaper installation process.

For someone like me who isn’t exactly an expert, using the Spoonflower prepasted wallpaper made me feel like I had great control over my space and oddly gave me a confidence boost to keep decorating and curating my space. I loved how simple, quick and easy putting up the wallpaper was and I’ve found myself wanting to do more and more spaces around the home. I also fall in love with so many designs that I want them all in my house. In saying that, I do have to mention that wallpaper isn’t always the cheapest or most budget friendly option and I did wait for sales or discount codes to purchase my wallpaper. I do think that paying a little more was worth it as the quality of the paper and print was excellent, I loved the connivence of the prepasted wallpaper and the simplicity to install it. Not having to worry about paste or anything like that really made the cost worth it for me.

Although not a necessity at the moment, I am thinking of wallpapering a few of the closets in the house just to add some more colour and whimsy to the house. I definitely want to use more Spoonflower prepasted wallpaper to do so as it’s honestly so easy and convenient. I have done some small spaces using this wallpaper such as my linen cupboard and pantry. Although most may think that is a crazy idea, it brings me joy and makes me love my home and space even more. Plus it hurts no one and looks amazing!

If you have been thinking about wallpapering or purchasing Spoonflowers prepasted wallpaper, I do hope you look into Spoonflower as they are wonderful to deal with. Their customer service is also great and they are very quick to fix any issues you come across. I also find the range of other products they offer can really help when curating a fun space. If you are planning to embark on a wallpapering adventure of your own, I wish you lots of luck! Put on some fun music, get into the zone and go create a wonderful space!

Thank you for this review! I’ve done quite a few peel and sticks, but never prepasted, but the prepasted is so much cheaper that I couldn’t afford not to, lol. This post makes me confident that I can do it!

Thanks for the review. My only experience installing wallpaper is with traditional (not pre-pasted) wallpaper, which I’m ok with but open to an easier alternative if it provides the same durability. My concern is that Spoonflower’s website advertises their pre-pasted wallpaper as suitable for a “temporary” rather than “permanent” installation, which seems to be borne out by the fact that the non-pasted version is a good deal more expensive (prohibitively so in my opinion).

Thank you for checking out my review. I have installed various types of wallpaper including traditional with the paste method and for me personally, I think the pre-pasted from Spoonflower is just so much easier and more forgiving to work with. I also have vhronic pain issues and health problems so I found that this wallpaper was the easiest for me to use. After having Spoonflower wallpaper in my house for several years I’ve seen only some peeling on the edges in my toilet and that’s about it.To fix it I just spray the back with water and it sticks to the wall again. When I have removed the wallpaper off a full wall before (flooring guy damaged it), it left no residue or marks and literally just peeled off the walls with no issues. I’m wondering if that’s what Spoonflower means by being temporary. There’s a bigger push to be “renter friendly” so I wonder if that’s all they mean. I fully understand about the price, it isn’t cheap at all but they do really good sales throughout the year. I’ll have my desired wallpaper measured out and ready then after it goes on sale I’ll order it. Sometimes they do specific wallpaper sales or just general sales are good too. If you’d like close-up pictures of anything please let me know! Hope this helps <3
