Over the last few years, I’ve loved setting time aside to sew and I don’t see that changing any time soon. However, given how much we are pushed today to consume and always be craving more, I wanted to consciously think about what and why I am making things so they are useful and not just ‘more stuff’. After my wardrobe rail collapsed a few months ago, I figured that the universe was telling me I needed to cull a few items from my wardrobe. I wanted to move items on that I never reached for which made me realise, that I don’t reach for a lot of my wardrobe because it either doesn’t fit right, it’s damaged or it’s uncomfortable to wear. Something had to change here. So this year, I think my sewing goals may look a little different.
Sewing Room Goals:
-My current sewing room, or enrichment enclosure as it’s sometimes referred to, is my safe space and I love it. However, the storage situation is a little all over the shop. This year, I really want to do a full declutter, reorganise and clean out as after using the space for a few years, I now know what systems work and which don’t.
-I’d also love to use this chance to upcycle some of my storage solutions using things like paint, old wallpaper, and other decorations. I’d also love to wallpaper the inside of my sewing kitchenette unit and possibly even the inside of the closet. I have found that after I decide to clear out a space, if I decorate it and have fun, I really keep on top of the tidying and organising so this will help me in the future.
-This is the year I also do a bit of a fabric clear-out. Luckily I know a few people who will happily take fabric donations and this will help me clear some space.
Repair, mend and alter:
-Recently I realised that a fair few items in my wardrobe I don’t wear because they are either ill fitting, need repairs, are broken or I just don’t feel good in them. This year I hope to take these items and alter, adjust, and mend until I love the piece again without having to buy something new.
-I’d love to try some vintage clothing mending techniques as it could be a great way to learn something new.
-This will also give me a chance to downsize my wardrobe a little.
-I want to finally spend an entire weekend JUST adding in pockets to EVERYTHING!
Upcycle and Reuse:
-Certain garments I have made/own will be completely stripped for parts ie. fabric, zips, buttons.
-I’d love to focus on upcycling more despite how daunting it feels.
Get a little crafty:
-Does it shock anyone when I say I have a box of unfinished projects? Well I want to finally tackle this box and get some projects completed and out of the way. This box also contains broken things that need to be fixed (such as old door wreaths that have broken), I’d love to fix these items and also move them on.
-Sewing is fun, but I really miss wielding my hot glue gun and rhinestoner. This year I’d love to do a few more crafts and also blog some crafts from the previous year.
-I really also want to try learning how to crochet and get back into knitting and relearn it.
Shop the Stash:
-When I do sew, I plan to only shop my stash. I really do not need new fabric and have not missed shopping for fabric over the last few years.
-Keep chugging through old fabric bundles and using up older pieces from my stash
No new sewing projects:
This does not mean I am not sewing anything, what I mean is that my sewing wishlist is so long, I do not want to add anything new to it. I only want to pick one or two projects at a time and enjoy doing them slowly rather than getting overwhelmed by a never ending to-do list.
-Keep making things that are practical and useful (such as pouches).
Move item along:
-Like most, it’s probably time to do a bit of a wardrobe clear out in general and divide my items into what’s staying, what’s getting sold, what can be donated and what should have become a wash rag years ago.
-I plan to sell my items in a few places but please feel free to check out my Depop.
-Whilst being asked for years and years if I’d ever sell the dresses I sew, I’ve always said absolutely not. Well, I was hoping to make an amendment to that and say, “I think I might sell some of the dresses I made for myself, in their conditions but full transparency about what they look like on the inside” (yeah my overlocker isn’t in great shape so there’s a few unfinished seams). These will be posted on Depop and any blogs with the items for sale will have a Depop link. I’d love to find homes for all my creations and previously loved garments.
Looking upon my goals for 2026, I am sure that my end of year garment wrap up may look a little different by the end of the year. A big personal goal for the year is to downsize my wardrobe so this goal has greatly inspired most of my sewing goals being mostly about mending, altering and learning how to make my clothes more functional. There will still be sewing projects but my main focus will be getting things moved on, fixed up and organised.
