Taming the Fade
It’s really common in the modern pinup realm to embrace bold and coloured hair. Many pinups turn it into their signature whilst other change it up frequently keeping their look fresh and fun. As I’ve recently discovered, dying your hair can be a transformative experience adding vibrancy and personality to your look. But the excitement of a new colour can quickly fade if not properly cared for. Here are some tips to help your dyed hair retain its brilliance and shine.

Washing Wisely:
- Frequency Matters: Wash your hair less frequently, ideally every 2-3 days and sometimes if you can handle it, once a week can be enough. Over-washing strips away natural oils that protect your hair and fade the colour.
- Cool It Down: Use cool or lukewarm water when washing your hair. Hot water opens the hair cuticle, causing the colour to bleed out faster.
- Colour-Safe Shampoo and Conditioner: Invest in a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated to protect dyed hair. These products are gentler on your hair and help preserve the colour. It’s always worth asking your hairdresser for products they recommend to keep your colour bright and bold.

Minimizing Damage:
- Heat Styling with Caution: Limit your use of heat styling tools like blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners. If you must use them, apply a heat protectant spray to minimize damage.
- Sun Protection: The sun’s UV rays can damage your hair and fade the colour. Wear a hat or apply a leave-in conditioner with SPF protection when spending time outdoors.
- Chlorine and Saltwater: Chlorine and saltwater can strip away colour and leave your hair dry. Rinse your hair with clean water immediately after swimming and use a deep conditioning treatment to replenish moisture.
Colour-Boosting Treatments:
- Colour-Depositing Conditioners: Use a colour-depositing conditioner weekly or bi-weekly (depending on the frequency of which you wash your hair) to refresh your colour and add vibrancy. Choose a shade that matches or complements your hair colour.
- Colour-Enhancing Masks: Deep conditioning treatments with colour-enhancing ingredients can help keep your hair vibrant and healthy. Look for masks with ingredients like pomegranate, acai berry, or henna.
- Gloss Treatments: A salon gloss treatment can add a layer of shine and protect your hair colour. This is a great option for a temporary boost of colour and vibrancy.

Lifestyle Choices:
- Diet and Nutrition: Eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help promote healthy hair growth and prevent colour fading.
- Stress Management: Stress can take a toll on your hair, including causing colour fade. Practice stress-management techniques like yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature.
- Regular Trims: Split ends can make your hair appear dull and lifeless. Schedule regular trims to maintain healthy hair and prevent further colour fade.
By following these tips and incorporating a hair care routine specifically designed for dyed hair, you can extend the life of your vibrant colour and keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful.
