The Little Prince Museum in Jeju South Korea

The Little Prince: A Korean Love Story

Very few books have shaped my life the way ‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has and still remains a huge part of my life. This timeless tale of a young prince’s journey through life and love, has captured hearts worldwide as his navigation of the adult world is very relatable and understandable. Whilst in South Korea, I was struck by how popular this little French story was and whilst on Jeju island, I had the opportunity to go visit the The Little Prince Museum. The Little Prince pops up all over South Korea but for me, this museum was a highlight of my trip. In South Korea, the story holds a particularly special place, inspiring countless adaptations, merchandise, and a dedicated fan base. Let’s delve into the enduring love for The Little Prince and explore the museum.

Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Jeju Island, South Korea, lies a hidden gem for those seeking a tranquil and introspective experience: The Little Prince Museum. This immersive museum is a tribute to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s timeless tale, offering a unique blend of art, culture, and philosophy. As you step into the museum, you’re immediately transported to a world of wonder and imagination. The exhibition spaces are thoughtfully designed, with floating sculptures and interactive installations that bring the story to life. Each room is a sensory experience, inviting visitors to contemplate the profound messages of the Little Prince.

I didn’t realise there was a museum for The Little Prince until I was already in Jeju, it was a pamphlet at a hotel I was staying at that tipped me off and when I found myself with some time on a quiet afternoon, I hopped into a taxi with a friend and scooted off. I was originally set to explore this museum alone but having a friend there made it one of my favourite experiences, mainly because I got to verbal diarrhoea all my knowledge and facts about the story at her and she couldn’t really run away. We rocked up to the museum on a Tuesday afternoon and it was almost empty, I think there were no more than about 6 other people visiting so it felt like we had the whole museum to ourselves which I loved because some parts of South Korea felt very crowded.

The museum was opened in 2022 so it’s relatively new but features a wide range of exhibits to visit. There are spaces covering the life and writings of the author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, interactive photo spots, a black light room featuring each planet the Little Prince visits, a rose garden area and loads of fun interactive activities.

The room that took my breath away was the blackight planet room. This room was really large and filled with white 3D structures of each planet and asteroid The Little Prince visited on his adventure. The different planets had a description about them and personally, I had so much fun telling my friend about each planet. This room was really visually stunning; the over all simplicity of the space made it one that was easy to navigate but also remain impactful. We were super lucky that this room was basically empty whilst we visited so I could get a really good look at everything. I do regret not taking more photos but I honestly was just so happy to be there that I was a bit too in the moment.

The museum had a unique mirror room which projected patterns from the story all over the walls which created a koleidescope pattern due to the mirror placements. If you do plan on visiting, I’d recommend those who wish to wear a skirt, especially a short one, to make sure they are covered up as there are mirrors on the floor and it’s very difficult to hide your unmentionables. This room was really visually stunning and reminded me of some of the modern art installations you can find. My friend and I had a lot of fun in this room.

To make the museum a little more interactive, there was a great art installation where you got to decorate a character, scan it into a projector system and it would be added to an animated movie on the wall. The idea is that everyone can colour in their own shape and it’ll all come together in one world. You get free reign over your design and it was so exciting seeing your silly creation become a moving image on the wall for all to see. This installation would be great for those with kids. This area also had a free stamp postcard making zone which makes for a great souvenir.
