Get Fit and Fabulous: A 1950s Inspired Workout and Exercise Routine
The 1950s were a time of booming post-war optimism, and fitness was no exception. Women embraced exercise with enthusiasm, seeking to maintain a healthy and glamorous figure. In today’s health conscious world, there are heaps of workout to suit all bodies and fitness levels. While the focus may have differed from today’s high-intensity workouts, the 1950s offer a nostalgic and effective way to get fit and feel fabulous. In a personal effort to feel healthier and more energetic, I’ve started adding some extra bits to my workout/health routine and wanted to share some routines I’ve tried with you.

Embrace the Glamour:
Before diving into the routine, set the mood! Put on a cute workout outfit inspired by the era. Think fitted capris, a flattering top, and a stylish headband. Don’t forget some upbeat music to keep your energy high. Of course, you can wear whatever makes you comfortable but the whole point is to have a little fun so go find a cute scarf for your hair.
Warm Up and Stretch:
Begin with a light warm-up to prepare your body for exercise. This could include:
- Jumping Jacks: 2 sets of 20 repetitions
- Arm Circles: 10 forward and 10 backward circles
- Leg Swings: 10 forward and 10 backward swings for each leg
- Stretching: Gently stretch your major muscle groups, holding each stretch for 15-30 seconds (for me it’s my shoulders, back, hips and legs).
Cardio with a Twist:
The 1950s favored cardio that was both fun and effective:
- Hula Hooping: This playful activity engages your core and provides a surprisingly good cardio workout. Aim for 2-3 minutes of continuous hula hooping.
- Jump Rope: This classic exercise gets your heart rate up and improves coordination. Aim for 2 sets of 30 seconds of jumping with 30 seconds of rest.
- Dancing: Put on your favorite swing tunes and dance around your living room. This is a fun way to get your body moving and burn calories.
- Youtube Heroes: There are some great Jack Lalanne workouts on YouTube if you’re looking for something fun and different.
Strength Training for a Sculpted Look:
The 1950s focused on bodyweight exercises and light weights to achieve a toned and feminine figure:
- Squats: 2 sets of 15 repetitions
- Lunges: 2 sets of 10 repetitions per leg
- Push-Ups: Modified push-ups on your knees or against a wall, 2 sets of 10 repetitions
- Bicep Curls: Using light dumbbells or soup cans, 2 sets of 12 repetitions
- Tricep Dips: Using a sturdy chair or bench, 2 sets of 10 repetitions

Cool Down and Stretch:
After your workout, take some time to cool down and stretch to prevent muscle soreness:
- Light Walk: Walk in place for a few minutes to gradually bring your heart rate down.
- Static Stretches: Hold each stretch for 30 seconds, focusing on major muscle groups.
Remember:
- Listen to your body and adjust the intensity and duration of the exercises to your fitness level.
- Stay hydrated throughout your workout.
- Make it fun! Enjoy the process and celebrate your progress.
Beyond the Routine:
The 1950s also emphasized healthy habits for overall well-being:
- Balanced Diet: Focus on whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein.
- Good Posture: Stand tall and walk with confidence.
- Rest and Relaxation: Get enough sleep and allow your body to recover.
By incorporating these elements into your routine, you can channel the glamour and fitness philosophy of the 1950s while achieving a healthy and toned physique. Personally, this routine has been added to my life over the last few months and over time, I’ve seen my body look a little more toned and my energy levels are up a bit. I do still have to take it easy as to not flare up my Endo, but i find being gentle and even spreading out the exercises throughout the day in little bursts, help me get through. I will of course note that I am not a medical professional and my routine will not fix or change your life. Always consult a medical professional before starting any health journey and do your research. I just wanted to share what I’ve been up to and hopefully inspire someone to come on this exercise journey with me. So, put on your favourite tunes, grab your hula hoop, and get ready to feel fabulous!
