Butterick 6284 is a charming vintage-inspired dress pattern that offers a delightful blend of retro elegance and modern comfort. This pattern, designed by Gertie, features a fitted bodice with a flattering neckline and a flowing skirt that adds a touch of whimsy. It’s been about two years since I made Butterick 6284 by Gertie and it’s a pattern that I’ve really been wanting to sew again because the dress is always super comfortable and stylish to wear. Butterick 6284 is one of those underrated vintage style patterns where it doesn’t get the hype it deserves and the fit of the final product is super underappreciated. Although I have reviewed this dress on the blog before and have already shared two different variations of this dress, I absolutely had to use up some cute stash fabric and make something for the cooler weather.

As I’ve already given a full review of Butterick 6284, I don’t feel the need to do so again so I just wanted to share some information about the pattern in general and share my own sewing experience of this dress. At this point, I can whip up this dress within an afternoon and once the gussets are on, you’re basically smooth sailing from there. Butterick 6284 is the pattern I always recommend when someone is looking for a light challenge in their sewing after only making really simple dresses. With the multitude of gussets, this is a great pattern to learn how to sew such a skill as you have many attempts and with the construction of the dress, you can choose your best gussets to be on display and hide the unsightly first few attempts.
As I’ve made this dress a few times already, I wanted to add a little something to the skirt and after going to Cooly Rocks On this year, I saw so many pleated skirts that were handmade I knew I had to give this skill another go. The final pleated skirt in my version came out really cute and I loved how it all came together in the end. It wasn’t until I was actually frolicking in the dress that I realised I forgot to add pockets so I think next year, I might spend a whole weekend just adding pockets to most of my clothing.

In an attempt to be more mindful of my consumption and spending habits, I shopped my stash of fabrics for this project and ended up choosing four meters of cotton from Homecraft Textiles. It was a dusty green cotton with dark green ditsy flowers all over it, and it gave me a bit of an Eastern European vibe, which I love. This fabric originally had its own project, but I knew it would take me too long to finish all the other projects in my head, so if I just use the fabric now, it’ll be fine. The fabric was soft, comfortable and great to work with. I also have it in a blue tone which I am saving for another dress I have in mind. When choosing fabric, I wanted something with a light autumnal feel that I could wear on its own or with a cardigan. Originally this garment was going to kick off my amazing autumnal sewing burst of creativity but instead it ended up being the only thing I made for cooler weather all year. Or at least so far.
This is my final plea to get this pattern noticed and into your sewing collection:
Key Features of Butterick 6284 that give it a modern vintage vibe:
- Fitted Bodice: The bodice is designed to accentuate your curves and provide a polished silhouette.
- Flowing Skirt: The skirt offers a graceful and feminine drape that complements the fitted bodice.
- Underarm Gusset: The underarm gusset ensures a comfortable fit and allows for ease of movement.
- Back Zipper: The back zipper provides a secure and classic closure.
My Experience:
I recently sewed up Butterick 6284 and was thoroughly impressed with the outcome. The pattern was well-drafted and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I opted for a lightweight cotton fabric and found that it worked perfectly for this style. The dress turned out to be incredibly comfortable and flattering.
Tips:
- Choose the Right Fabric: Opt for a fabric that complements the vintage aesthetic of the pattern. Lightweight fabrics like cotton, rayon, or linen are excellent choices.
- Pay Attention to the Details: The success of this pattern lies in the details. Take your time to ensure that the seams are neat and the fit is perfect.
- Don’t Fear the Gusset: Take this pattern as a chance to learn how to sew a gusset and gain a new skill.
- Consider Your Body Type: While this pattern is generally flattering, it’s always a good idea to consider your body type and make any necessary adjustments.

Overall, Butterick 6284 is a fantastic pattern for anyone looking to add a touch of vintage glamour to their wardrobe. Its timeless design and comfortable fit make it a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. I will absolutely be sewing it again soon, maybe next year, as it’s just such a hidden gem. Overall, I love my third rendition of this sewing pattern and think it’s a great addition to my current wardrobe. Since I’ve made this dress, I’ve worn it several times and found it comfortable, breathable and easy to style.

The photos for this blog were taken on a mini getaway trip in the beautiful South West of WA at Fishbone Restaurant/Winery. I paired the dress with my favourite hat from Lack of Colour and my everyday jewellery (green amethyst necklace, and some bracelets).
