I think my husband is pretty great and I’d like to think that after we have both shuffled off this mortal coil, we end up haunting a cute little woodland area as groovy bedsheet ghosts. A girl can dream right? Well to help manifest this scenario, I wanted to share a cute and cosy date night idea with a spooky twist; painting plaster bedsheet ghosts. This budget friendly at-home cosy date night can be easily adjusted to suit all couples and tastes so feel free to grab the idea and run. As well as bedsheet ghosts we also painted up some pumpkins!

Before we start I will note that for my own date night, I poured and casted my own figures to paint weeks before the actual date night. I understand that this can take more time, money and effort so please feel free to acquire yourself some unpainted plaster casts for your own date night. Try this link to get you started or here. I purchased the moulds and other materials because I plan to use each material and utensil in the future for other crazy ideas.
Materials Needed:
-Ghost figure
-Paint brushes
-Acrylic paint
-Cup of water
-A cute picnic blanket
-Snacks and a delicious beverage
-Spooky themed music or movie
(if you plan to pour and cast your own figures like I did, you will also need the following)
-Plaster of Paris
-A drop sheet to protect your work surface
-Silicone moulds (I used this ghost)
-Water
-Silicone spatula for mixing
-Scale
-Large cup or mixing bowl for mixing plaster
For those planning on not making their paintable figures from scratch, please kindly scroll down a paragraph or two and catch up with us later for all the spooky cuteness! Of course you’re welcome to stick around and see how I went pouring plaster all over my house.
Well let’s get started with this date night prep; I do recommend starting this a few days, even weeks before you want to do this date night as it will let the plaster fully dry. I found each figure needed up to three days to fully dry.

-Set up your work area by putting down a drop sheet of some kind as this can get messy; I use an old plastic picnic blanket on top of a drop sheet.
-Read the instructions on your Plaster of Paris and then follow those directions to get the best casting liquid. I used a small kitchen scale to weigh out my plaster of Paris into a plastic pouring jug and then I added my water to it. Using a silicone spatula, I mixed my plaster until all the lumps were out.
-Working quickly, carefully pour your plaster into your silicone ghost mould in a smooth flow. Try not to stop and start the plaster flow as this can create visible lines.
-Once your mould is full, gently tap the sides for a few seconds to get the air bubbles out. I found gently tapping the sides quickly with both hands to work best and slightly jiggling the mould.

-Let the moulds set for a few minutes (no more than 5 needed for mine). The moulds can create a water patch on the top of the pour, you can dab this away with a paper towel.
-Once you can touch the mould and it not be soaking wet, it will be quite firm. Gently peel the silicone mould away to reveal your cast.
-If necessary, use a knife to remove or cut away any parts and reshape your cast.
-Let your cast fully dry over several days.
-Feel free to make as many as you’d like.
Welcome back those who skipped all the hassle of making our own moulds, let’s get right into the best part. Date night!
It is completely up to you how you wish to set up your cosy date night space. I do recommend putting in a little effort, even if it’s just lighting a tea light candle nearby, it’ll make all the difference. For my own date night, we just stuck to scattering some tea lights around, setting up a project to play cute spooky movies, we watched Frankenweenie, and some snacks for us to enjoy.

We set up our drop sheet and picnic blanket combination to protect the floors (we went picnic style but feel free to move to a table or even just on the couch), and we set up a painting station including a mini picnic table, silicone mat, a jar of water and then our paints and brushes within reach.
We were inspired by retro floral bedsheets and chose our colours to suit our homes colour scheme and vibe. Starting with two or three base layer coats which we let fully dry in between layering (the heater helped with this), we then went ahead and attempted to paint various floral patterns on our ghosts. My husband is the first to admit he isn’t the most artistically gifted individual so he enjoyed painting the plain base layers more than the flowers which he left up to me mostly.
The evening was really lovely getting to chat, watch cute spooky themed tv on the projector (we finished the night by watching Agatha All Along) and getting paint everywhere. I had to get changed half way through because I dropped a freshly painted pumpkin onto my dress which immediately went into the wash. Everyone loves a date with an outfit change right?

Our evening ended up with cuddles on the couch and finishing off our tea and snacks. All up it was a really fun date night and hubby said he will happily have another painting date night again. Yay!
The following day, over lunch I painted on the little black eye holes for our sheet ghosts and then gave them all a few coats of sealer spray so they last a little while. Once fully complete, they were used as seasonal decor and I can’t wait to put them out again next year. I’ve even left one up on purpose in a hidden spot because I just thought they were too cute.
Take the idea and run:
This data night can easily be adjusted to be a girls night or a fun family friendly activity for those with kids. Of course your ghosts can be painted up to suit any personal style and would make a cute gift as well. They can be used a name card holders if you cut a little slit in the top of the ghost after remoulding them or even a photo holder. These little ghosts have inspired so many future projects so keep an eye out for those.

As spooky season continues, I wish you all a delightfully spooky time with your loved ones! Enjoy your new ghost friends for years to come.
