As someone with chronic pain issues, comfort in clothing is a must which has lead me to make todays project, some tie up, wrap around pants. Now these pants are certainly not my original idea and I have owned a pair of these pants which I picked up in KL well over a decade ago and yes, I still wear them. Wrap around pants are super comfortable as you tie them around your waist making them easily adjustable and convienient. As someone who gets very nervous to sew without a pattern, I figured trying out a project like this would be a great starting point These wrap around pants are super simple to make so I wanted to give them a go and whip up a pair just in time for a Bali trip I had planned.

When it came to choosing fabric, I shopped my stash and found some really striking Balinese Batik cotton which I purchased on a previous trip and figured it would be the perfect material. I had about 4 meters of this fabric which was more than enough and I’ll be using the left overs for future projects.
As mentioned above, I didn’t have a pattern for these pants so I’ve created the graphic below to hopefully give you an idea of how I went about cutting out my fabric. I folded my fabric in half (folded edge marked in graphic) and used the measurements provided. These measurements came from a variety of sewing sources I found online and I adjusted a few sizes to better fit me and my shape.
Here’s some amazing sources I found which helped me create my pants:

Once my fabric was folded in half, I cut out the curves I needed and the extra waistband pieces/straps according to the graphic above.
I then sewed the crotch curves together (right sides together). And down the waist straps on both sides.
It was here that I hemmed the pants all around as it’s easier to do this before the waistband is added.
The waist ties were added to the two waist edges and once they were finished, thats all the garment needed to be done.

I followed the steps put forth by the two sources I shared above and each has slight variations depending on personal preference. I’d highly recommend checking them out as without them, I probably would have made a disaster. All up there, are a few changes I would have made such as making the waist strap just a little longer (maybe up to around 68″) and also make the crotch curve 13″ just for a little extra room when my Endo belly starts to bloat.
Overall, for my first attempt at making such pants with no pattern, I’m super pleased with how it all came out. Wearing these pants on my Bali holiday was super comfortable as I could stay cool and covered keeping the sun off my legs and I was also able to jump onto a scooter with my dignity in tack and not flash anyone. The fabric was a great choice as it was light and flow-ey so I’d recommend going a soft natural fibre for ultimate comfort. Throughout my trip, I wore these pants a few times and already want to go back and make another pair with the minor adjustments mentioned above.

When wearing these tie up wrap pants I received several compliments whilst out and about, I loved when people thought it was a skirt only for me to kick my legs out and yell “surprise pants!” which I came to find was the best kind of pants.
