Cruisin’ with Class: A Guide to Proper Etiquette at Vintage Car Shows

Tips for Making Your Next Car Show Amazing for Everyone

Chrome gleams, engines purr, and a bygone era comes alive at a vintage car show. These events enjoyed worldwide offer a delightful journey through automotive history, showcasing meticulously restored vehicles and the passionate people who care for them. But with all the excitement, it’s important to remember proper etiquette to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. After attending these kind of events since I’ve been a toddler, I thought I would share some tips and advice on how to behave to make sure you show respect to those around you and of course, to the cars as well.

Respect the Rides:

These aren’t just cars; they’re rolling works of art. Here’s how to show them the respect they deserve:

  • Eyes Only: The cardinal rule – do not touch the vehicles. These lovingly restored beauties can be easily damaged by fingerprints, body lotions and perfumes, grease, or even just by leaning against them. Admire them from a safe distance and use your eyes to take in the details.
  • Curb Your Curiosity: Resist the urge to open doors, trunks, or hoods unless explicitly invited by the owner. These cars might have unique mechanisms or delicate parts best left undisturbed.
  • Mind Your Bags: Swinging bags or backpacks can easily scratch the car’s paintwork. Be mindful of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to your body.

It’s obvious to see that some of the cars at car shows are show stoppers and their owners are very proud of them. Despite how much you love the car, you are never to touch it. Some paint jobs on vehicles can be well over $10 000 and the owners do not want to have their event destroyed because someone touched, scratches or left a mark on their car. But what to do if you want a photo with the car?

  • It’s as Simple as Asking: Try to find the owner, it’s common for them to hanging out near by so ask around. Be polite and ask if you could take a photo with their car but promise not to touch it. You’ll be surprised how nice most people are about having their car shown off. After taking your photos, take another minute to thank the owner for their time and give their car a compliment. Always be respectful.
  • No one around? Even if you can’t find the owner, you can always take a photo near the car but not touching it. There are so many poses you can do with a car that doesn’t involve touching it.

If the vintage car owner is happy for you to take some photos with their car and they allow you to touch it, there are still some things you should do;

  • Remember what lotions, creams or perfumes you have on your skin and avoid touching the car if you’ve used such products.
  • Be mindful of your shoes and their heels, of any buckles, buttons or chains you have on your clothing. Don’t let them touch the car or they will leave scratches!
  • Be respectful; it’s not always in good taste to start taking some NSFW style photos. The owner may not want their car associated with certain styles of photography and it’s just not polite to take overly sexy photos inside someones car without them knowing.
  • Be polite at all times: always make sure to thank the owner and see if you can tag them or their car on social media when you post the photos.
  • Don’t take forever taking the photos: you are not the only one wanting to take photos with cars so please be mindful of others around you. Try to get your shot within 2 minutes to allow others to do the same unless there’s no one around.

Mingle with the Masters:

Many car shows are a chance to meet the dedicated owners and enthusiasts who have poured their time and passion into these vehicles. Here’s how to interact with them:

  • Ask Permission: Before snapping close-up photos, especially of interiors, politely ask the owner for permission. They might have specific requests regarding photography.
  • Strike Up a Conversation: Many owners are more than happy to share stories about their cars, the restoration process, or the history of the vehicle. Engage them with genuine interest and avoid intrusive questions.
  • Respect Their Space: While conversation is encouraged, be mindful of the owner’s time. If they seem busy talking to others, politely excuse yourself and come back later.

Becoming a Show Stopper (Yourself):

While the cars are the stars of the show, here’s how to ensure your presence enhances the experience:

  • Dress the Part: Embrace the vintage vibe! Consider wearing period-appropriate clothing to truly immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
  • Leave the Snacks Behind: Food and drinks can create spills and attract unwanted attention from insects. Enjoy refreshments at designated food areas.
  • Mind Your Manners: Be mindful of noise levels, especially if there are children around. Respect the personal space of others and avoid blocking their view of the cars.

By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure a fantastic time at a vintage car show. Remember, it’s about appreciating automotive history, connecting with passionate people, and celebrating the enduring allure of classic cars.

So, polish your manners, put on your vintage best, and get ready for a delightful cruise through automotive nostalgia!
