For years I have had a love-hate relationships with mornings. I love my sleep but I personally find that if I don’t push myself to be productive in the morning, sometimes my day slips away from me and I don’t get everything done. I’ve slowly been changing my morning routine and I have become much more productive, energetic and I now look forward to my morning routine.
Morning drink; I struggle to function in the morning without having a cup of tea; I even find holding the warm mug in my hands very comforting and soothing. I am very lucky to have a wonderful partner who will leave a cup of tea on my bedside table for when I wake up (yes I’m happy to drink my tea cold sometimes). A morning drink doesn’t need to be a tea or a coffee, having a freshly squeezed juice, or some water with lemon and mint can also freshen you up in the morning.
Breakfast; I have never been a huge breakfast person but I still force myself to have some whenever I can. If you’re like me and don’t always have the time to make something fancy, try getting into the habit of doing some prep the night before or look for overnight oats recipes. Sometimes even some fruit, yoghurt, nuts and muesli can be a great breakfast!
Exercise; Up and at ‘em kids! You don’t need to do a full workout first thing in the morning but even doing a couple of stretches can make you feel great for the rest of the morning. I like to take my yoga mat outside onto the grass in the sun and do about 20 minutes of stretching. I’ve never been an exercise person but I find even doing sometime small makes me feel more energetic all day. It can also be fun to play some fun and happy music to help set your mood!
Message a loved one; It’s nice to message someone special everyday. It doesn’t have to be your significant other; it’s can be a parent, sibling or a friend. It’s nice to let people know you are thinking of them and that you miss and care for them. It’s a nice gesture and you’ll make someone else’s day too!
Daily To-Do List; I am a big believer in lists. By creating a to-do list in the morning whilst drinking my tea, I know what needs to get done and I can stay on task throughout the day. This also gives me time to prioritize; if I have appointments throughout the day, I may only get time to do a couple of things. I can keep the list for the next day and just add whatever needs doing.
The world around you; It’s nice to check up on what’s happening in the world as well as on your Facebook feed. I check a couple of news websites and read articles that interest me. It’s nice to know what’s happening around the globe; if a topic comes up in conversation you can contribute and share more information.
Hygiene; Having a good wash in the morning can help you feel refreshed and ready for the rest of the day. Wether you shower, wash your hair or go through your morning skin care routine, it’s nice to take some time for personal hygiene. I also like to make sure my kitchen is clean as it’s the centre of my house. If my kitchen is clean and tidy, I feel more relaxed and calm (I really don’t like clutter or mess).
Music; play your favourite playlist, album or radio station. Sometimes hearing that one super happy song in the morning can set you up for the rest of the day! Rock out, dance like no ones watching and sing loudly!
