Daisy Jean Floral Totoro Brooch Collection Review

We all have those guilty pleasure movies where we can sit back, relax and escape on amazing adventures inside fantastical worlds and wonderful creatures; for a lot of people, that’s Disney but for me, it’s actually Studio Ghibli. For those that aren’t aware of Studio Ghibli, stop what you’re doing, go and find a copy of their movies, binge and then come back because you’re in for an absolute treat! Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio who write and produce wonderful movies with some iconic characters; it’s hard for me to choose just one favourite but a huge classic is ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. Another person who also has a deep love of studio Ghibli is Daisy Jean Floral and I am so excited to look at their new Ghibli brooch collection today.

It’s really easy to find Disney characters on clothing and accessories but it’s a bit more of a challenge for those looking for Studio Ghibli. Thank the forest spirit for this amazing collection from Daisy Jean which has now expanded and doubled in size. Daisy Jean Floral is an Australian company which creates unique and beautiful resin jewellery and are particularly well known for their brooches. Their designs are individual, stunning and have so much work and thought put into them that each item becomes its own piece of wearable art. The mini Totoro collection features three brooches; Totoro, mini blue Totoro and friend, and some super cute soot sprites.

Totoro Brooch
Starting with the icon himself; Totoro is a protective forest spirit who is super cute, curious and cuddly. Daisy Jean have immortalised him complete with his protective rain leaf on his head. He is made from acrylic, designed, laser cut and hand made in house at Daisy Jean HQ in Sydney Australia. He is the measured size (taken from highest and widest points): H 7.2cm X W 5cm. His main body features a shimmer rippled grey resin with gorgeous detailing on the face making him look exactly like he does on the film. As such a huge icon (he is Japans Mickey Mouse figure and Studio Ghibli’s icon), he is perfectly captured and able to travel with you on all your adventures.

Mini Totoro Brooch
When Mei first discovers a mini Totoro under her house, she, of course, follows it before it realises it’s invisibility booster must be faulty (see what I did there?) and vanishes. It’s okay though, she finds big Totoro and befriends him. Mini Totoro and friend pop up throughout the movie and they are equally just as cute as big Totoro! Featuring Totoro’s favourite forest spirit sidekicks of our full-size Totoro are his two little counterparts. These guys make the perfect addition to the Totoro collection. Compared to the Totoro brooch, this brooch is the measured size of (taken from highest and widest points): H 5.5cm X W 4cm. They are made from acrylic and designed, laser cut and hand made in house at Daisy Jean HQ in Sydney Australia. The main body of the blue Totoro and the little white one is cut from a shimmery acrylic which really stands out beautifully from the rest of the piece. There is so much detail in this piece that it truly is a work of art.

Soot Sprite Brooch
Soot Sprites are tiny little puffballs of soot which live in old abandoned houses and cover the place in dust and soot. They are cute, harmless but do leave a bit of a mess wherever they go. It’s also rumoured that their favourite food is star candy which makes this brooch extra adorable. Featuring everyone’s favourite little guys, these soot sprites have two stars and are made of the prettiest holographic black glitter acrylic! They are made from acrylic and designed, laser cut and hand made in house at Daisy Jean HQ in Sydney Australia. This brooch measures at (taken from highest and widest points): H 5.5cm X W 4cm. As a big fan of the soot sprites myself this brooch is a definite favourite as it reminds me of both Totoro and Spirited Away; two Ghibli films in one brooch!

I’ve actually never owned an entire brooch collection but the second I got an email about this one being released, BAM IT WAS MINE! I mean, how could I not embrace my love of Ghibli and own it in a beautiful resin form which I can wear all the time. These brooches have been very well-loved during this lockdown and even if I’m in my pyjamas for the day, I still pin them onto my house cardigan just to make myself feel a bit special.
All of these brooches are of very high quality, they are sturdy, cute and very well made. There is so much attention to detail in every piece that you can definitely be confident in their quality. I cannot fault these brooches and as a Ghibli fan; I was prepared to be harsh if need be. To really bring out the fun nature of these brooches, I wore them with this Totoro dress I made myself especially for them. I originally bought the fabric many months ago but as soon as I saw these brooches, I knew they would be a perfect match. All these brooches were paired with Daisy Jean Floral Bonnie Hoops in this gorgeous pale blue (my favourite colour) and a couple of MAK sweaters. If you’re a Ghibli fan, I’d love to know! What’s your favourite film? How great is the music? Oh my gosh, so many strong female characters right?! See, we have much to discuss!
